When a violent storm threatened their boat, Jesus’ disciples panicked while he remained asleep, apparently untouched by what had overwhelmed everyone else.

What frightened them was not merely the storm itself but the apparent absence of an immediate response from the person they believed could save them.

We often make the same mistake, interpreting the absence of immediate change as evidence that nothing is being held under control.

Yet peace does not require circumstances to cease being threatening; it requires that they cease to dictate our inner response.

Perhaps the deeper meaning of sleeping through the storm lies precisely in the capacity to preserve an inner order that external disorder has not yet managed to destroy.
