Consumers do not always search because they already want something; surprisingly often, they begin wanting it because someone has first given them a reason to search.

A product to which people were previously indifferent can suddenly acquire relevance when a celebrity mentions using it, a friend reveals an unexpected benefit, or a compelling story attaches meaning to what had seemed utterly ordinary.

What changes is not necessarily the product but the mental category into which it has been placed: toothpaste becomes “the toothpaste that person uses,” and an obscure kitchen tool becomes the solution to an inconvenience the consumer had tolerated without consciously identifying it as a problem.

Only after this reinterpretation does search behavior emerge, which is why measuring preexisting search volume alone may cause marketers to overlook products whose demand has not yet been discovered because it has not yet been created.

The most powerful content, therefore, does more than answer an existing question: it can make a question come to mind that the audience had never thought worth asking.

① Consumer demand is determined primarily by the objective usefulness of a product.

② Celebrity recommendations are effective only when consumers already intend to purchase the advertised product.

③ Search-volume data reliably identifies products for which future consumer demand will arise.

④ Effective content can generate demand by altering how consumers perceive the relevance of an otherwise ordinary product.

⑤ Consumers tend to resist products associated with problems they have not consciously recognized.
