지문
Modern life is remarkably efficient at shortening the distance between desire and gratification, yet the elimination of that distance may carry a cost we rarely notice.
When almost anything we want can be ordered, streamed, or delivered immediately, we may assume that faster satisfaction necessarily produces greater pleasure, only to discover that what is effortlessly acquired is often just as effortlessly taken for granted.
Part of the reason may be that anticipation is not merely an empty interval preceding enjoyment; by repeatedly directing attention toward a future reward, it can amplify the significance we attach to what has not yet arrived.
This does not mean that deprivation is inherently desirable, but it does suggest that people who deliberately hold every impulse under control are not necessarily denying themselves pleasure; some may be preserving the psychological conditions under which pleasure can remain meaningful.
The paradox, then, is that a culture capable of satisfying more desires than any previous one may have to relearn an ancient skill: not merely how to obtain what is worth pursuing, but how to leave enough distance for it to remain worth wanting.
What is effortlessly acquired is often just as effortlessly taken for granted.
[What is effortlessly acquired] / [is often just as effortlessly taken for granted].
* what is effortlessly acquired = 쉽게 얻어진 것
* be taken for granted = 당연하게 여겨지다
2. just as effortlessly
John runs quickly, and Tom runs just as quickly.
effortlessly acquired
just as effortlessly taken for granted
